Tattoo Needle info
Tattoo needles are made by soldering a “needle grouping” onto a “needle bar”. The needle bar has a loop on the end so it can be attached to the tattoo gun armature bar. The tattoo machine’s electrical motor moves the bar rapidly up and down, about 80 to 150 times per second.Years ago every tattoo artist made their own tattoo needles. Each artist had there own technique of making the tattoo needles and mostly would be very particular on how each tattoo needle would turn out .

Today, 90% of Tattoo artists buy there tattoo needles pre-made, because it cuts out the work involved in doing a tattoo. They come sterilized and separately wrapped, for one use, it is good practice to use your tattoo needles only once, if you are doing a large tattoo design on your client, then maybe you can re sterilize them and keep them separate from other clients needles, “but in my opinion” if you truly want to be 100% sure you are not going to infect any one with a disease you are much better to destroy them once they have been used, this way you can guarantee that your customers are always safe .

TIP: If you really want to put your clients minds at rest, that there is no way they can get any sort of disease, is to use your needles once, open the sterilized needle in front of them and destroy it as soon as you have finished, make sure your client is aware your needles are single use and will not be reused on some else.
Type of Tattoo Needles:
Tattoo needle groupings can be made in several sizes and shapes, each used for a different effect. Liners and shaders are the main categories of needles. Common groupings are rounds, flats, and magnums (mags). Within these needle groups are given names like round, flat, stack and magnum. Tattoo needle groups usually consist of 3, 5, 7 or more needles.
Liner Tattoo Needles:
The liner type of tattoo needle is used for outlining a design. Liner tattoo needles are also known as rounds because they are grouped in a circular shape. Also when they are made they are tightly soldered together, so the end on the liner has a more defined point, the liner can come in many sizes, starting at a 1 liner which is not commonly used any more, to a 3 liner which is used for fine lines and used on a more delicate tattoo, commonly there are a few sizes that are used as liners and that is, 3, 5, 7, 10, 14 being the largest and also giving the tattoo a more bolded outline, and when made the sharps are are tightly soldered together and giving it a point. When the needles in the round are group tightly, a crisp solid line can be created. This round shape draws a uniform line like the tip of a pencil or pen.
Shader Tattoo Needles:
After a tattoo has been outlined using liner tattoo needles, the design is filled in using shader needles. The most commonly used shader and way the easiest to use is the round shader, they start from 3 and are done in 5, 7, 10, 14, 15. When they are made they are placed on to the needle bar grouped and soldered in a round shape, the sharps are not as closely grouped as a liner, they are spaced out giving the sharps more area to hold the ink and to be able to cover more skin space.

When your starting out using a tattoo gun or doing your first tattoo, a rounder shader is better to use, because as long as you do not over work the skin by going over the same piece of skin more than 3 times you are pretty right, and to do the coloring it is a smoother action, you just pick were you are going to start,( starting with the darkest ink first ) then all you have to do is just color in circular motion, overlapping the color as you go. You don’t have to be so vigilant about the strokes you do, as long as you use a circular motion you will be pretty right. I only ever used a magnum if the tattoo was very large or if the tattoo had long flowing hair and in this case, it was great because you could use a sweeping motion.

These needles are usually grouped in rows, but occasionally a round shader is used for filling in a small area. Different groupings create different effects and are given different names. A single row of needles is known as a flat. Two rows of needles (a “double flat”) that are placed one on top of the other are called a stack. The top row in a stack has one less needle than the bottom row (which is why the groupings are always odd). The two rows in the stack are offset to avoid the appearance of stripes in the shaded area.

Then you have a flat shader, this is a single line of needles across the bar, i never much liked using them because they leave a streaky look threw the tattoo, and you have to be really sure your taking notice of what you are doing with either the mag or the flat shader as if do a circular motion with these needles your going to scar the client by taking a chunk of skin out of the tattoo.
I actually knew a bloke that had gotten tattooed by a experience tattooist, he had been in the industry for quite some time but he had never used a flat before, he actually scared the customer pretty badly because he forgot that it was using a flat shader and started to tattoo like he did with a round shader, he went in a circular motion which scooped a large piece of skin out the tattoo. So if your planning to use a flat shader or mag then make sure you keep it clearly in your head that this tattoo needle is as sharp as a knife, and you really have to be on gaurd that you tattoo in more of a stroke motion than a ciruclar one
Using a magnum tattoo needle on a standard tattoo machine is no different than using any other tattoo needle–machine set-up and use remains the same.

The depth of a tattoo needle is the most important factor in the tattooing process. If the needle goes too far into the skin, it can cause the tattoo to excessively bleed pushing out the ink, scare up badly or can even cause infections and blood poisoning. So make sure that you only go out about 1/16 to 1/32 inch. Have a read below and this will help you under stand.
- You must first be familiar with the layers of skin and how far into the skin you need to go. There are seven layers of skin, but only two that matter when tattooing; the epidermis and the dermis. The epidermis is the outer layer of skin, and the dermis is the layer of skin the tattoo needle should be injected into.
-
Know how far to go. The tattoo needles need to go between 1 and 2 mm into the skin in order to reach the dermis. If you go any farther than that, it can cause unnecessary pain to the person receiving the tattoo. It is can also cause blood poisoning, due to the ink being injected too far into the body and bloodstream, Have a look below to see how it works
This photo shows the correct length of the needle. Basically it is just over a finger nail thick pointing out the tubeSet your needle. A tattoo needle needs to stick out of the gun about 1/16 to 1/32 inch. These measurements will vary from person to person, as everyone’s body is different. Your needle and tube need to match; if you are using a three-needle shader, you must also use a three-needle shader tube.
-
Practice your depth. Before tattooing a person, it is recommended that you first test the depth of the needle on a piece of fruit. If the fruit becomes torn apart, you know your needle depth is too much. The same is true when tattooing a live person. If the needle depth is too much, there will be an excessive amount of blood coming back out of the skin the needle is making.
